Standard and modified Mimetix Air® scaffolds were used in a recent study to establish an improved method to measure new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis). Angiogenesis is an important natural process for healing and regeneration in the body. In “Pre-screening the intrinsic angiogenic capacity of biomaterials in an optimised ex ovo chorioallantoic membrane model” the group at RAFT established and optimized the protocol for the screening of biomaterials. They further compared the performance of a range of biomaterials with varying porosities.
The different types of scaffolds investigated were composed of either natural or synthetic materials of combinations thereof, with The Electrospinning Company supplying Mimetix Air® scaffolds for the study. The authors show angiogenesis on the Mimetix Air® scaffolds as well as a significantly improved angiogenesis on those scaffolds when combined with a thin layer of natural proteins.
